Why We’re Cycling Down the Mississippi River

Contribute to the Mississippi River GoFundMe

Wander Like Water will embark on a bicycle tour down the Mississippi River starting August 2, 2017! We will ride and camp over 2,000 miles to connect you with the most expansive watershed in the United States.
Starting at the headwaters in Northern Minnesota down to New Orleans, Louisiana, we will monitor water quality using LaMotte and EarthEcho International kits. Our previous journeys focused on water conservation along the Colorado River, down Mexico’s Baja California, and around two Hawaiian islands. But the Mississippi moves the conversation to quality.

Packing Science Equipment on the Bikes

The River has been a chemical waste dump since the Industrial Revolution and the high amounts of fertilizer runoff cause deadly red algae blooms in the Gulf of Mexico every year. The Mississippi River is important for many reasons:

  • the watershed covers more than 40% of the United States
  • 4th longest river in the world
  • it serves as the drinking water source for over 18 million people
  • runs through or divides 10 states

Wander Like Water aims to create a connection to the River that so many have lost!

Our GoFundMe is setup to offset the cost of creating videos and the time needed to interview locals and professionals along the way. Our water quality test kits have been secured, but bike maintenance, food (aka our fuel!) and campground fees are still the primary expenses during the trip.

By interviewing diverse users of the Mississippi, we will bring you local knowledge of the health and wellness of the River and populations that rely on it. The water quality differs throughout the basin. We’ll investigate how the local treatment facilities are keeping residents’ water safe to drink!

Join Us Virtually

Your support is going to help us bring awareness to the Mississippi River and encourage more people to connect with their drinking water source. We aim to raise awareness about what may be lurking in the water systems that connect us all.

Join us on Facebook Live at 2:00pm CST on Wednesday, August 2, 2017 as pedal, cartwheel and conduct a water quality test in the headwaters of the Mighty Mississippi!

Tailwinds,

Sarah & Patrick
